A Thematic Analysis of the Structure of Delimitations in the Dissertation

Aim/Purpose The purpose of the research was to examine function and application delimitations—what researcher includes excludes in a study—in dissertation process. aim map delimitations process improve research, rigor relevance findings, doctoral completion rates using formalized standardized approach applied flexibly. Background All is bounded whether formally defined or not. Unlike limitations, which are issues addressed after study cannot control, what make project manageable focused on question. Yet, there no identified specifically discussed delimitations. Researching structure utility educational administration dissertations provided systematic analysis formation scope boundary studies. Methodology were examined descriptive quantitative statistics qualitative thematic from 28 universities. first stage included 30 dissertations. Triangulation conducted findings with training set 15 rubric generated primary sample. Contribution presented description interpretation nature framework Mapping gave detailed portrait internal external characteristics could aid students completing dissertation. Doctoral attrition rates, poorly completed dissertations, lack applicability results need remedied. Furthermore, method focus communities learners around common goal. Findings suggested used haphazardly lacked research. Three major themes emerged sections: rituals, equifinality, pragmatism. Topics within sections centered two axes: topics sampling procedures factors/variables design conceptual/theoretical framework.
